Jackson, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, suffers from bipolar disorder and has been hospitalized twice at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.He has pleaded guilty on to one count of wire and mail fraud in relation to using $750,000 in campaign funds to buy exotic items including fur capes and unusual celebrity memorabilia.

How is Bipolar Disorder treated?

Treatment should generally include a combination of medication and community support. Both are usually essential for the best outcome.

Lithium (brand names Eskalith, Lithobid) is the most widely used and studied medication for treating bipolar disorder. Lithium helps reduce the severity and frequency of mania. It may also help relieve bipolar depression.

Antipsychotic medications are used in those with bipolar disorder as a short-term treatment to control psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions.
